124: Jesus Calls Paul

Image
Previous Acts 9:1-20 Jesus Calls Paul Saul (later named as Paul) went to the high priest–urging that he be authorized to go to Damascus to seize followers of Jesus, and bring them back to Jerusalem. Saul was authorized to proceed; and, as he neared Damascus, a light from Heaven suddenly shone around him. He fell to the earth and heard a voice saying to him: “Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?” Saul answered, saying: “Who art thou, Lord?” The voice replied: “I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. It is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.” Saul was astonished and trembling. He answered: “Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?” Jesus replied: “Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.” The men who were traveling with Saul stood speechless. They heard the voice but saw no one. When Saul arose, he was blind. His companions led him by the hand into Damascus. He remained there three days, unable to see, and he neither ate nor drank. In

Previous Matthew 28:16-20; Mark 16:15-20; Luke 24:50,51; Acts 1:2-9 Jesus Instructs His Disciples And Ascends Into Heaven When Jesus appeared to his disciples while they were on a mountain in Galilee, they revered Jesus; but some of them had doubts. Jesus assured them, saying: “All power is given unto me in Heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you. And, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” Jesus also said: “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe: In my name shall they cast out devils, they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands

122: Jesus Commissions Peter

Previous John 21:15-25 Jesus Commissions Peter After Jesus and his disciples had eaten on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, Jesus said to Simon Peter: “Simon, son of Jonah, lovest thou me more than these?” Peter answered: “Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee.” Jesus said: “Feed my lambs.” Then Jesus asked Peter a second time: “Simon, son of Jonah, lovest thou me?” Peter replied: “Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee.” Jesus said: “Feed my sheep.” Then Jesus asked Peter a third time: “Simon, son of Jonah, lovest thou me?” Peter was grieved that Jesus had asked this question of him three times, and he replied: “Lord, thou knowest all things. Thou knowest that I love thee.” Jesus again said to him: “Feed my sheep. Verily, verily, I say unto thee, ‘When thou wast young, thou girdest thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest. But when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wo

121: Jesus Appears To His Disciples At The Seashore

Previous John 21:1-14 Jesus Appears To His Disciples At The Seashore Some time later several of the disciples–including Simon Peter, Thomas (called Didymus), Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, James and John (the sons of Zebedee), and two others–were at the Sea of Galilee. Simon Peter said: “I go a-fishing.” The others said to Peter: “We also go with thee.” They entered into a ship, went out from the shore, but caught nothing that night. In the morning Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not recognize him. He said to them: “Children, have ye any meat?” They answered: “No.” Jesus said: “Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find.” They cast as directed and were unable to draw in the net, because so many fish were in it. Thereupon one of the disciples said to Peter: “It is the Lord.” Simon Peter, who was naked, put on his fishing coat and cast himself into the sea. The other disciples came to shore in a little boat, pulling the net, fil

120: Jesus Appears To Thomas

Previous John 20:24-31 Jesus Appears To Thomas One of the twelve disciples, Thomas, was also called Didymus. He was not present when Jesus appeared to the others. The others told him: “We have seen the Lord.” Thomas replied: “Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.” Eight days later, when all the apostles were together behind closed doors, Jesus again stood in their midst and said: “Peace be unto you.” Then Jesus said to Thomas: “Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side. And be not faithless but believing.” Thomas said: “My Lord and my God.” Jesus said: “Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed. Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.” Next

119: Jesus Appears To His Disciples At Evening

Previous Mark 16:14; Luke 24:36-43; John 20:19-23 Jesus Appears To His Disciples At Evening Some of the disciples were gathered together secretly, fearing the authorities. In the evening of the day Jesus had appeared to Mary Magdalene, the two who had returned from Emmaus were telling how they had seen Jesus; and at that moment he appeared in the midst of the group, saying: “Peace be unto you.” The disciples were terrified and frightened, thinking they saw a spirit. But Jesus showed them his hands and the wound in his side, and said to them: “Why are ye troubled and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? Behold my hands and my feet, that is I myself. Handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.” And they were glad, knowing he was the Lord. Jesus said to them: “Peace be unto you. As my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.” Then Jesus addressed the disciples, saying to them: “Receive ye the Holy Ghost. Whosesoever sins ye remit, they ar

118: Jesus Appears To His Disciples As They Walk To Emmaus

Previous Mark 16:12,13; Luke 24:13-35 Jesus Appears To His Disciples As They Walk To Emmaus Two of the disciples were on their way to the village of Emmaus, nearly eight miles from Jerusalem. They were sad as they discussed the recent events. As they walked along, Jesus came to them and went with them; but they did not recognize him. Jesus said to them: “What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?” One of the disciples, names Cleopas, replied: “Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and has not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?” Jesus asked: “What things?” The disciples replied to him: “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people. And now the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel. And beside all this, today is the t

Previous Matthew 28:1-10; Mark 16:1-11; Luke 24:1-12; John 20:1-18 The Women Visit Jesus’ Sepulcher On the morning of the first day of the week Mary Magdalene with the other Mary went to the sepulcher where Jesus had been buried. There was a great earthquake; and an angel descended from Heaven, rolled back the stone from the door of the sepulcher, and sat upon it. His countenance was like lightning and his clothes were white as snow. The angel spoke to the women, saying: “Fear not ye; for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here; for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee. There shall ye see him. Lo, I have told you.” The women ran from the sepulcher quickly with great awe and joy to tell the disciples what had happened. On their way, Jesus met them and said: “All hail.” The women fell at his feet and worshiped

116: The Death Of Jesus

Previous Matthew 27:45-56; Mark 15:33-41; Luke 23:44-49; John 19:28-37 The Death Of Jesus From the sixth hour to the ninth hour, while Jesus was on the cross, there was darkness over all the land. About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, saying: “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” Some of those who heard Jesus said: “Behold, he calleth Elijah.” One ran, took up a sponge, filled it with vinegar, placed it on a reed, and pushed it up to give Jesus a drink. Some said: “Let alone. Let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” Then Jesus cried out in a loud voice: “Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit.” Having said this, he died and the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; the earth quaked; and rocks broke one upon the other. Graves opened and the bodies of many sleeping saints arose. The officer of the soldiers, and others that were with him, when they saw these things occurring at the death of Jesus, said: “Tru
