Because so many people seeking Jesus were always coming to him and his disciples, giving them not even leisure to eat, Jesus said: “Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while.” They went with Jesus privately by ship to a quiet and unpopulated place in the neighborhood of the city of Bethsaida. The people saw them going. Many followed and others, who guessed their destination, ran afoot out of their cities and arrived before Jesus and the disciples. About five thousand men, besides women and children, came to the desolate place. Previous Matthew 12:46-50; Mark 3:31-35; Luke 8:19-21 Jesus’ Mother and Brothers Come to See Him While Jesus was talking to the people, his mother and brothers came to the house but were unable to enter because of the large crowds which thronged about it. A messenger came to Jesus, saying: “Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee.” But Jesus replied to the messenger: “Who is my mother? And who are my brethren?” Then Jesus stretched his hand in the direction of his disciples and said: “Behold my mother and my brethren! A centurion, a Roman military officer, came to him and said: “Lord, my servant lieth at home, sick of the palsy, grievously tormented.” Jesus replied: “I will come and heal him.” Thereupon the centurion said: “Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldst come under my roof. But, speak the word only and my servant shall be healed.
