46: Jesus Asks: “Who Do Men Say That I Am?”
Matthew 16:13-20; Mark 8:27-30; Luke 9:18-21
Jesus Asks: “Who Do Men Say That I Am?”
While they were on the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, Jesus asked his disciples:
“Who do men say that I, the Son of man, am?”
The disciples replied:
“Some say that thou art John the Baptist; some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.”
Jesus asked:
“But who say ye that I am?”
Simon Peter answered, saying:
“Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Jesus responded:
“Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jonah; for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in Heaven. And I say unto thee that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys to the kingdom of Heaven; and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in Heaven; and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in Heaven.”
Then Jesus instructed his disciples to tell no one that he was Jesus, the Christ.
