Jesus Feeds Four Thousand

Jesus called his disciples to him and said:

“I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat; and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way.”

Many in the multitude of more than four thousand had come far. His disciples replied:

“Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a multitude?”

Jesus asked:

“How many loaves have ye?”

The disciples answered:

“Seven, and a few little fishes.”

Then Jesus commanded the multitude to sit on the ground. He took the loaves and the fishes, gave thanks, and broke them. He handed them to his disciples, who passed them to all who were there.

When all had eaten and were filled, the remaining fragments were gathered together and filled seven baskets.

Then Jesus sent the multitude away.
