Image
Previous Matthew 13:1-23; Mark 4:1-25; Luke 8:4-18 Jesus Tells a Parable of a Sower The same day that his mother and brothers had come to see him, Jesus went down by the seaside. Great multitudes came to hear and see him. Jesus sat in a boat and spoke to the crowd on shore, saying: “Behold, a sower went forth to sow. And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the wayside, and the fowls came and devoured them up. Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth; and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth. And when the sun was up they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them. But other fell into good ground, and brought forth good fruit, some a hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.” When they were alone, his disciples asked Jesus: “Why speakest thou to them in parables?” Jesus replied: “Because it is given unto

Previous Matthew 12:46-50; Mark 3:31-35; Luke 8:19-21 Jesus’ Mother and Brothers Come to See Him While Jesus was talking to the people, his mother and brothers came to the house but were unable to enter because of the large crowds which thronged about it. A messenger came to Jesus, saying: “Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee.” But Jesus replied to the messenger: “Who is my mother? And who are my brethren?” Then Jesus stretched his hand in the direction of his disciples and said: “Behold my mother and my brethren! For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in Heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.” Next

27: Jesus Refuses to Give a Sign of His Authority

Image
Previous Matthew 12:38-45; Luke 11:16, 29-32 Jesus Refuses to Give a Sign of His Authority Certain of the scribes and Pharisees came to Jesus and said: “Master, we would see a sign of thee.” Jesus answered: “An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly, so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it; because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and, behold, a greater than Jonah is here. The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it; for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, a greater than Solomon is here. When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth no

26: Jesus Heals a Dumb and Blind Man

Image
Previous Matthew 12:22-37; Mark 3:20-30; Luke 11:14-36 Jesus Heals a Dumb and Blind Man A man both dumb and blind was healed when he was brought before Jesus.  Those who saw this miracle were amazed and said: “Is not this the son of David?” But when the scribes from Jerusalem and the Pharisees heard of it, they said: “This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub, the prince of the devils.” Jesus knew their thoughts and responded: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand. And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then shall his kingdom stand? And if by Beelzebub I cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges. But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you. Or else how can one enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? And th

25: Jesus Anointed

Image
Previous Luke 7:36-50 Jesus Anointed Jesus accepted an invitation to go to the home of a Pharisee for a meal.      While Jesus sat eating, a sinful woman of the city came to the house, bringing an alabaster box of ointment. She stood weeping and washed his feet with her tears, dried them with her hair, kissed them, and anointed them with ointment. When the Pharisee saw what the woman was doing, he thought to himself: “This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him; for she is a sinner.” Jesus said to the Pharisee: “Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee.” The Pharisee replied: “Master, say on.” Jesus said: “There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty. And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?” Simon answered, saying: “I suppose that he to whom he forgave most.” Jesus repli

24: Jesus Invites All Men To God

Image
Previous Matthew 11:25-30 Jesus Invites All Men to God Jesus explained to the multitude how they could reach the Father through the Son, saying: “I thank thee, O Father, Lord of Heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. Even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight. All things are delivered unto me of my Father, and no man knoweth the Son but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him. “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Next

23: Jesus Speaks Of John The Baptist

Image
Previous Matthew 11:7-19; Luke 7:24-35 Jesus Speaks of John the Baptist When the messengers of John the Baptist had left, Jesus said to the multitude concerning the Baptizer: “What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? But what went ye out to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously appareled, and live delicately, are in kings’ courts. But what went ye out to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, ‘And much more than a prophet.’ This is he, of whom it is written, ‘Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.’ For I say unto you, ‘Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist; but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.’” The publicans and people who had been baptized by John glorified God because of Jesus’ words of tribute to John. But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected his words against themselves, being not baptized by Joh

22: Jesus Answers John The Baptist Regarding His Identity

Image
Previous Matthew 11:2-6; Luke 7:18-23 Jesus Answers John the Baptist Regarding His Identity John the Baptist was in prison, but he heard about the works of Jesus. He called two of his disciples and told them to go to Jesus and ask: “Art thou he that should come? Or look we for another?” They found Jesus and said to him: “John Baptist has sent us unto thee, saying ‘Art thou he that should come? Or look we for another?’” While the two disciples of John were with him Jesus healed many who were infirm, many who were suffering with plagues, and others who were filled with evil spirits; also, to many that were blind he gave sight. Then Jesus said unto the disciples: “Go and show John again those things which ye do hear and see: the blind receive their site, and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.” Next

21: Jesus Raises The Widow's Son

Image
Previous Luke 7:11-17 Jesus Raises the Widow’s Son Soon afterwards Jesus set out to visit the city of Nain. His disciples and many people went with him. When they came near to the gate of the city, they saw a funeral. The deceased was a young man, the son of a widow. Many of the people of the city were with her. When Jesus saw the mother weeping, he was filled with compassion; and he said to her: “Weep not.” Then he touched the coffin; they who carried it stood still; and Jesus spoke, saying: “Young man, I say unto thee, ‘Arise.’” Thereupon, he who had been dead sat up and began to speak; and Jesus delivered the young man to his mother. Solemn wonder swept through the crowd. Some said: “A great prophet is risen up among us. God hath visited his people.” And throughout all the region this story was spread. Next

20: Jesus Heals The Centurion's Servant

Image
Previous Matthew 8:1, 5-13; Luke 7:1-10 Jesus Heals the Centurion’s Servant Jesus went to Capernaum after he had delivered the Sermon on the Mount. A centurion, a Roman military officer, came to him and said: “Lord, my servant lieth at home, sick of the palsy, grievously tormented.” Jesus replied: “I will come and heal him.” Thereupon the centurion said: “Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldst come under my roof. But, speak the word only and my servant shall be healed. For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me; and I say to this man, ‘Go,’ and he goeth; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he cometh; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he doeth it.” When Jesus heard these words, revealing the great faith of the centurion, he was deeply impressed and said to those who followed him: “Verily I say unto you, ‘I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.’ And I say unto you that many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham and Isaac and

Pevious Matthew 5:1-48; 6:1-34, 7:1-29 The Sermon on the Mount The fame of Jesus spread so widely that great numbers came to see him from all over the countryside. Seeing the multitudes, Jesus went up into a mountain. There he sat down; and when his disciples came up to him, he taught them, saying: Character and Duties of the Disciples “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven. Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil again
